Savannah Beaches: A Short Ride to Sandy Bliss
No trip to the Georgia coast would be complete without a trip to the beach. Although it is a coastal town, Savannah does not have its own public beaches. However, hop in the car, and within minutes you can be enjoying the surf of any number of nearby beaches. A Savannah beach trip is worth planning for your next getaway.
Tybee Island
The gentle breezes, warm sands, and the sound of the waves are paradise in and of themselves. However, when you combine that with exceptional outdoor exploits, history, culture – and of course great food – and you have the makings of the perfect day. That day awaits you at Tybee Island. Tybee is located about twenty minutes from Savannah. A barrier island, Tybee’s five miles of beaches are the perfect locale for catching rays, or just to frolic and play. Dip your toes in the waters of the Atlantic, or cast a line to fish from the pier and pavilion located on the island’s southernmost tip. Throughout the spring and summer day and into the night, the pavilion become a hub of activity and entertainment from locally and nationally famous artists alike. Some call it perfection, but for the locals, it’s just Tybee.
St. Simons Island
St. Simons Island is home to two public beaches which are known well for their perfectly white sands and wonderful amenities. Massingale Park Beach and Coast Guard Station Beach feature fun for all, whether its playing a game of Frisbee golf, or grilling and chilling out on the shore. Trained lifeguards and other safety officials are on duty throughout the summer months. Additionally, there is year-round public access to a picnic area and bathhouse. Visitors can enjoy free parking, and don’t have to pay a fee to fish. Drinking is allowed on both beaches.
Jekyll Island
Larger in size than St. Simon’s Island or Tybee, Jekyll Island boasts three public beaches for sun-and-surf lovers. In addition to ten glorious miles of beach and ocean, Jekyll Island provides much more for those seeking other adventures. Check out the local museums, or take an Oceanside lesson in horseback riding with the help of an accomplished guide. All beaches feature picnic spots, as well as showers. Further away from the coast, you will appreciate the quaint ambience of the local historic district.
In Savannah, beaches aren’t hard to access. Whether you choose the nearby convenience of Tybee, or seek a true getaway with St. Simons and Jekyll beaches (about an hour out), you are sure to be in for a truly memorable, and ever enjoyable, experience.
