Tybee Island is the northeastern-most of Georgia's Barrier Islands. Tybee consists of a sandy beach on its eastern shore and a tidal salt marsh on its western shore. The interior is maritime forest and freshwater sloughs. The five miles of sandy beaches on Tybee Island are wide and clean, with gentle waves and warm water. There are five major beaches on Tybee, including South Beach, Mid Beach, North Beach, Savannah River Beach, and Back River Beach.
The Tybee Island Light Station here is one of just a handful of 18th century lighthouses still in operation in North America. This beautiful lighthouse has been guiding ships to the shore for over 270 years. Tybee Island's position near the mouth of the Savannah River made it an ideal location for a lighthouse. First built in 1736, the lighthouse stood 90 feet tall, making it the highest structure in America at that time. Although the original lighthouse has been rebuilt several times, part of the third lighthouse, built in 1773, still stands as the bottom 60 feet of the current lighthouse. The lighthouse's current black and white markings have been reverted back to its 1916 daymark.
The Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion are a great location for fishing and people watching. The original Tybrisa Pavilion stood for 75 years as a landmark on the South Atlantic Ocean. Built in 1891, its open dance floor and coastal setting made it a legendary stop on the “Big Band” tour. Destroyed by fire in 1967, the new pavilion was dedicated in 1996. In addition to offering spectacular views, the pavilion is also used for dances, musical performances, and a number of festivals and special events are held here throughout the year.
